Exercise and Metabolism

Your metabolism refers to how many calories you burn during the day simply by living.
One of the problems with just eating less when you are trying to lose weight is that eating too little will simply lower your metabolism so that you will burn fewer calories during the day. This drastically decreases the effectiveness of lowering your caloric intake by eating less.
If you exercise you will burn calories while you exercise, but, even more importantly, your metabolism will increase and you will burn more calories throughout the day. This will make your diet much more effective.
There are two major types of exercise that are especially beneficial for weight loss, aerobic exercise and weight lifting.
Aerobic exercise is the most effective tool for weight loss. You burn calories while you are exercising, but you also burn calories afterwards because your metabolism remains raised for several days. Some examples of aerobic exercise include jogging, walking, biking, and swimming.
Weight lifting is also important for weight loss, but it is especially important for maintaining weight loss. Weight lifting burns calories while you are working out, but, more importantly, the added muscle that comes from weight lifting will increase your metabolism PERMANENTLY. Muscle will burn calories simply by being there. This makes it incredibly effective for maintaining weight loss. You can eat more food than before, but, if you have more muscle mass, you will burn more calories simply by living.

The Key to Losing Weight

Dieting has become an obsession in our culture. There are diet books, diet magazines, diet foods, diet pills, and numerous other diet products all purporting to help you lose weight "the easy way." Here's the truth, THERE IS NO MAGIC BULLET!
This may come as a shock to you, but you will actually have to work (at least a little bit) if you really want to lose weight and keep it off.
The key to losing weight is ....(drum roll please)...CALORIES!
If you eat too many calories you gain weight (fat). If you eat too few calories you lose weight. It's that simple.
You see, it's not about eating certain "special" foods or not eating carbs or fatr or any of the other crazy things that people are constantly trying to pass off as the next miracle diet that makes the weight fly off. It's really very simple, you need to eat less (eat sensibly) and exercise so that you burn some of the calories that you eat and increase your metabolism.

Eat Less

That's right, I said it. You have to eat less to lose weight. I know that some diets will try to tell you that you don't have to eat less, you just have to eat different things, no fat, no carbs or some other nonsense. The real trick is simply eating less.
By eating less I do not necessarily mean eating less food, I mean eating fewer calories. You can eat more food and still eat fewer calories if you choose the right foods. The key is to eat less calorie dense foods like fruits and vegetables. These types of whole foods contain fiber and vitamins and minerals, they are not only good for you, but they also make you feel more full so that you eat less.

If you concentrate on eating these types of foods you will begin to eat fewer calories and lose weight with out even noticing that you are eating less. That is the point after all, lose weight with little or no effort. Of course this is not totally possible, but a few little lifestyle changes an put you on the road to weight loss and it will be much easier than you think.

Could what you drink be the key to losing weight?

According to the National Soft Drink Association, the average American consumes over 600 12-ounce servings of soft drinks per year. Assuming the average soft drink has about 165 calories (like Coca-Cola) that an extra 99,000 calories per year! These are empty calories with no real nutritional value, just alot of sugar.
What would happen if you stopped drinking all of these empty calories and started drinking water instead, do you think you would lose weight? A pound of fat has 3,500 calories so 99,000 calories equals over 28 pounds of fat every year! If you stopped drinking soft drinks and substituted water you could lose almost 30 pounds a year. That is an enormous amount of weight for such a small change in your diet.
Not only will you lose weight, but you will also feel better and be healthier. When your body is properly hydrated your skin will improve, you will have better work-outs, you will have fewer headaches, and you will be less susceptible to infection. Sometimes thirst can be mistake for hunger so you might even eat less when you are properly hydrated.

Are “diets” the best way to lose weight?

This is a common question, but you might be surprised at the answer. Sure diets will allow you to temporarily lose weight, but they are not the best way to lose weight and keep it off. Let me repeat that again: Diets are not the best way to lose weight and keep it off!
To really lose weight and keep it off you need a new healthy lifestyle, not a diet. This healthy lifestyle, like the one detailed in my e-book, The Sensible Diet, should include a diet and exercise program that you can stick with. A diet is no use if you can only continue it for a short time.
That is the downfall of all of the fad diets, you cannot continue them forever and when you start to eat normally again the pounds inevitably come back, usually bringing a few extras along. These fad diets are too extreme, no one can stay on a diet without sugar or carbs or any of the other strange diets that are out there forever.
A sensible diet, or more accurately a sensible lifestlye is the answer. You need to find a diet and exercise program that you can stick to for the long term and that is the key to sustainable weight loss.
